Management Studio keeps blowing up

Within the last two weeks SQL Server Management Studio has started to blow
up with a "Would you like to report this to MS" window.

It's running on XP Pro.  2GB RAM and plenty of HD space.

I have run a complete scan with Norton and Defender.  I even ran a Checkdisk
on that drive with no error.

I have uninstalled and re-installed SSMS.

I am up to date on MS updates.

It works fine on the DB machine itself.  That machine is not up to date as
far as MS updates.

I am at a complete loss.

Help!

Kyle!

Is this while you are doing a specific task or at random?  I used SSMS on XP
Pro for a long time with no problems like that and know plenty of others
that do as well. So I suspect that it has more to do with not being on the
latest service packs for the OS but there isn't much to go on.

As I had stated below, my machine IS up to date and IS having problems.

The machines that are NOT up to date are NOT having problems.

Your statement below confused me then:

>>It works fine on the DB machine itself.  That machine is not up to date as
>>far as MS updates.

I thought you were saying SQL Server updates are all set but the Machine /
OS was not.  Are you saying the database server (another machine altogether)
is at a lower revision than the client tools on your machine?  If so you may
want to try and reinstall the client tools and only apply the same service
packa s the server itself. I don't know of an issue per say but nothing else
pops out.

I let it go into the debugger and what it told me was and which makes
sense...

"A generic error occurred in GDI+"

As I was seeing strange stuff on the screen when the error occurred.

I even tried re-installing the graphics driver (which is the latest one
available from Dell and it's over a year old.)

But with the same results.

I may have to call MS.

If it is a Graphics driver issue they may not be able to help much. If you
can't get an updated driver you may need a new video card.

P. S. - Up until about a week or so ago I had used the SSMS since it was
released with almost no problems.

Impossible to tell from here what it might be. The only speculation I really
can offer is a bad memory board. Pull your memory boards out one by one,
and see if that changes.

Else you might be better off opening a case with Microsoft, since someone
needs to analyse the dumps.

Well here's how I finally got this fixed.

I ran a repair on the .NET 2.0 Framework.

Then I had to reboot the machine.  (Before rebooting the machine it still
didn't work.)

Then when I ran SSMS, the run-time system must have detected that something
changed because it re-compiled the app.

And it's now working!

Hopefully the installation of a SP or KB fix somewhere along the way didn't
cause this, because it really made life painful.

Glad to hear that you got it working at last!
