Management Studio along side Management Studio Express

Is it still impossible to run Management Studio for SQL Server 2005 and
Management Studio Express on the same machine or has that been fixed?

I would like to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced
Services but the last time I tried that, it overwrote my Management Studio
with Management Studio Express.

Thanks,

Dale

Hi Dale,

As for SQL Server 2005 Management studio Express(SP2), it still can not be
installed side by side with standard Management Studio. Surely, I would
recommend you use Management Studio only since it has superset of
management studio express.

Also, if you have installed the management studio express(overwrite old
one), you can try reinstall the SQL Server 2005 workstation tools (include
the management studio)again. And the standard management studio can connect
both standard SQL 2005 instance and express instance well. Therefore, you
do not need to use management studio express.

Why would it need to be fixed?  If you can use Management Studio, why on
earth would you need to keep a functional express version?

I would reinstall Management Studio.  Or, if the setup for Express allows
it, do not install the workstation components if you already have the "full"
versions on your machine.

Well, one reason to install Management Studio Express is that it is
automatically installed if you install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
Advanced.  So, if you want reporting services and full text search on your
Express Edition you're going to get Management Studio Express by default.
That is an undesirable behavior.

A more desirable reason would be to test Management Studio Express just to
know what features are available to customers/users of the app I am writing
but I can handle that part in a virtual or another machine.

Which was the point of my question in the first place.  I want to install
the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced because I am writing an
application that needs Express Edition with full text search.

So it sounds like, for my development machine, the best way to go is still
to install the avanced features version of Express Edition and then
re-install my tools.  Is that correct?

Thanks,

Dale

Well, I don't think both tools will run side-by-side, so if you install one
tool and then re-install the other, that one is now boss.

Looks like your best bet is to go with a virtual machine for one or the
other.

And in the meantime you, can file an issue on Connect to fix whatever is
preventing the two apps from co-existing.

If you don't want to register et. al., send me some detailed information and
I'll happily file the suggestion for you.

I'm already registered for SQL Server on Connect.  I think this one was beat
to death when it was first announced that the tools couldn't exist
side-by-side.  Since they finally relented and allowed us to use Management
Studio to manage Express, I was just hoping that maybe they had relented on
the side-by-side issue and that I had missed it.

I guess it is still status quo on that one.

Well, thanks for your help.  At least I know what my options are.
