Installing SQL Server 2005 Toolsversion of Query Analyzer (Management Studio?) on my client PC.. The owner of the computer before me had installed many beta versions of .NEt 2.0, SS 2005.. and of course these must be removed before installing the current release. I went to control panel and removed everything that was beta related.. but still got the message that there were some Beta versions installed on my PC.. so I removed everything .NET related (1.0, 1.1, SDKs, 2.0, J# Redist. Package), and ran a repair install for Visual Studio 2005 so it would still run.. After that step, when I put the SS2005 CD in my drive, the autorun doesn't start, and comes with this error "Cannot open the file splash.hta" (so I definatly removed too many things).. I browsed to .exe to install the tools, and it STILL says there is beta things installed.. I'm left with these two questions: 1. What did I remove that broke the .hta file association 2. How can I figure out what installed program or registry entry is preventing me from installing the SS2005 client tools? A couple of our guys (the ones that installed beta or CTP components) had
difficulties as well. You will probably find these links helpful. If I remember correctly we had to use smartmsizap to get the remnants uninstalled and cleaned up. http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/07/01/434814.aspx http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/uninstall/ http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/support/uninstall/default.aspx http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/30/487096.aspx http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/commentrss.aspx?PostID=485987 http://www.huydao.net/setup/msiinv.zip http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/09/13/465401.aspx I would start by removing all SQL Server 2005 related items and they try the install. 2005 express beta 2 that still had components installed. I'll start removing them and see how that works. I used the
smartmsizap to remove it successfully.. but I still got the error.! I re-ran msiinv, and it found a second version of the Beta 2.. I smartzaped the second product code, but it does not go away. I've re-run and restarted many times all of the tools, and it is still on the computer. I'm about ready to format the whole thing. What else should I try?
