Dear all,

I am a newbie of SQL server, and I am going to study it because of its
excellent BI functions. Before this, I have been experieced with
Oracle, and I will try client-server connection to get started with SQL
server 2005.

I have the official release of SQL server 2005 Developer Edition, 2
CD's from MSDN subcription, which I think is equivalent to the one DVD
most people have.

On the server side, I have installed SQL server 2005 on a Windows 2000
advanced server box. I clicked most options and the install is fine. I
can launch Management Studio, the next question is: how to create the
sample database?

On the client side, I have installed the following components with the
same CD's on a Windows 2000 professional box. The options are:
Install => Server components, tools, Books online, and samples => ... a
few screens =>
===============================================
Components to install:
SQL server database services
Analysis services
Reporting services
Notification services
Ingration services
Workstation compoenents, Books online and development tools
===============================================

I cannot be sure which one is Management Studio, so I click "Advanced":
There is a Client components section:
===============================================
Connectivity Compoents
Management Tools
Business Intelligence Development Studio
Software Development Kit
SQL XML Client Feature
Legacy Compoenents
===============================================

However, I still cannot tell, so I installed Client components plus SQL
server books online. After installation, I can see:
Start => Programs => SQL Server 2005 => Configuration Tools =>
===============================================
SQL Server Configuration Manager
SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting
SQL Server Service Area Configuration
===============================================

My question: how to install Management Studio on client?

Any comments are highly appreciated, including pointing me to relavant
document sections. Thanks in advance.

hi, I have successfully installed Management Studio now.

For those who encounters a similar problem:
I guess my problem early on was due to my installing from CD #2.
Although the client tools are mostly located at CD #2, you still have
to install it from CD #1. If you have a DVD, you probably won't
encounter my problem. Besides, it takes more than 30 min. to install
the client, and I actually re-install twice to succeed, the first
install stops and disappears misterously at about 10 min.. I mean,
client install might spend more time than you think.

A minor question: how to uninstall SQL server 2005?
There were five items in the add/remove programs, I tried all, three
actually uninstall, the other two don't. I think in the situation of
incomplete installation as I had, I'd better uninstall before
re-install, but I am not sure about the right way to uninstall.

My next step will to create a sample database on server so that I can
play with. My final purpose is to create cubes from our data in Oracle
RDBMS. Therefore, I think I have to learn UDL, analysis service, and
database link (this is Oracle term), etc.. I will study the books
online, but if anyone can show me the document or any instructions, it
can save me a lot of time searching around. Thanks again.
