Unable to open SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP

I have installed the .Net Framework 2.0 and the MSXML 6.0 Parser and then the
SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP app but when I go to the icon and
click on it to open the app the hour glass displays for a split second and
then goes away.  The SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP never displays.
I have uninstalled both the SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP and
the SQL Server Express app but nothing works.

I have been having the same problem, exactly.  If you are able to resolve
your problem, would appreciate you're sharing it with me.  Thanks,
Bill...

I did figure it out.   I had to uninstall books online to get it to work.

The problem lies in the Management Studio Express tool released on November
7. There is a new Management Studio Express CTP download available at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=82AFBD59-57A4-455E-A2D6-1D4C98D40F6E&displaylang=en.

This update fixes the defect where installing the full Books Online
documentation prevented Management Studio Express from starting.  With the
update, Management Studio Express and Books Online no longer interfere with
each other.

To update Management Studio Express CTP:

1) Uninstall Management Studio Express CTP from your machine.
2) Clear your browser's download cache.  If you are using Internet Explorer
6, you can do this by starting Internet Explorer, clicking the Tools |
Options menu item, and then clicking the "Delete Files..." button in the
"Temporary Internet Files" section.
3) Download and run SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi (or
SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi) from the URL listed above

Unfortunately, your link points to the exact file that was released on Nov.
7 - apparently.
The file that your link points to is the exact same size and has the same
digital signiture date as the original.
Installing the file from your link does the same thing as the original msi
file - even after following your instructions "To update Management Studio
Express CTP"

Does anyone have an updated link to the updated CTP?  Can someone provide
info on the stats of the updated msi (such as file size and date) so that we
can be sure we have the newest msi?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure about that?  When I look at the file it's dated 11/11/2005, not
11/07.   The original file dated 11/07/2005 was removed from the download
site and replaced with the corrected file dated 11/11/2005.

The digital signiture date on both are 11/03/05.  The file size of both is
31,404,032.  I don't know what the date of the msi file is because when I
copy it from the web site, it puts the current date on it.  (The copy I
downloaded today has a Created date of 12/13/05, Modified date of 12/13/05,
and an Accessed date of 12/13/05)

Also, when was the file replaced?  I downloaded it the first time on
11/15/05.

What are the file sizes of the two versions?  What are the digital signiture
dates of the two versions.

Thanks for your help.

P.S
If I do have the correct version (and always had) then do you have any
suggestions on how to install both Books on Line and SSMS on the same
computer?

Thanks again.

The original file was posted on 11/7 and is 31,404,032 bytes in size.  The
updated file was posted on 11/11 and is 31,401,984 bytes in size.
Based on what you report as the file size and timestamp, you do have the old
file.  One of the developers for Management Studio Express informed me that
there is a problem with the download center, that is, not all the servers
used by the download center got the updated msi file.  There is an open
service request to get this fixed, but in the meantime here's a potential
workaround :  rename (or delete) the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Tools\Shell key.
This will allow Management Studio Express to run with Books Online, but will
break Management Studio(the full version, not the express version)  if it's
also installed.

Thanks Gail, renaming (safer than deleting, I think) the key worked just
fine (luckly in my case I don't have Management Studio - full verion
installed).  Just FYI, the path to the key is
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\-- note the "90" in
the path - at least that is where it is in my registry.

Also, once the CTP is running, you can rename the key back and CTP continues
to run - until you exit.

Will there be a post some other way to find out when the download center has
fixed this issue?

Again, I thank you for your help.

Gail,

I tried downloading this today and still end up with the old file
(31,404,032 bytes.)  It doesn't appear like download center has
addressed the issue yet?

Thanks,

The folks at the download center said they verified that the correct files
are on all the download servers and they cleared their caches.
Theoretically, you should be getting the new file.  If you wouldn't mind,
would you please clear your IE cache and try again and let me know what
happens?  I can reopen the service request and the results of clearing your
cache would be useful information for them.

Thanks,

I have this problem, it is caused by downloading the SQL Server 2005
books online. As soon as I uninstall that, the CTP works. I even tried
the 11/11/2005 CTP install, as indicated in later posts,  but still had
the same problem. I'll wait till this is ironed out to download the
books online again.
