Removing an email attachment file

I have a temporary file that is an attachment to an email message. If I try
to delete it I get an exception indicating that the file is in use. It is
probably the email system the is using the file. My question is, is there
something that I can wait on or poll for so that I know that this file can be
removed? I looked at file security and attributes but nothing seemed to match
this situation.
