.... but it may be on the CD as a separate installer. Many OEMs include the
framework redist in their distribution of Windows.

Hi Leslie,

The .NET framework is not installed with Windows XP or SP2. But you can
have it installed on you machine through Windows Update.

I remember that the WinXP SP2 CD from MSDN subscription come with .NET
runtime(don't know which version, because I'll have to install v1.1 for
VS2003 anyway later during installation, I didn't bother to install it).

It's on a seperate DOTNETFX folder, and not installed by default.
