Can FTP but cannot publish -- do I need the FP extensions??matter what I try." Here's the background: I maintain five websites on three different hosts. Four of the five publish fine. One has developed a glitch that will not let me publish. When I try to publish, FP goes through the usual processes -- asks for user ID and password, tries to connect to remote site, remote site file structure pops up in the right-hand file window, and it looks as though publishing is going along fine. Then, I get an error message "Cannot find webserver 'mydomain.org' at Port 80." Then it says something about check your settings and try again. I can try and retry and at times the edited pages that I want to publish do appear on the live website -- looks like they were published. Most of the time, however, nothing happens except frustration. I removed and installed FP extensions time and again to no avail. So -- I contacted another host service and signed up with them for one month hosting, thinking that the problem may be with my host server. The new host gave me DNS info and an IP address to which I can publish my website until the new DNS propagates. I published to the new host at http://NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN -- AND THE SAME DAMN THING HAPPENED -- got the "port 80" error message and when parts of the website published, they were screwed up -- no theme, links not all working, and the like. So -- I tried another approach. In FP I opened a new website from scratch and made an index.htm file. Then, I told FP to FTP the new site to the IP address: ftp://NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN -- and it FTP'ed the new website without a problem. Now what I plan to do is rebuild my website using FP but without any of the FP goodies -- no theme, no hit counter, and the like. This website contains only text and photos, links to a few other sites, and a place for people to send email to the webmaster. If all I am doing is entering text and photos on this site, do I need the FP extensions installed on the host -- if not, is there any problem with leaving the extensions installed? Thanks. : -- if not, is there any: If all I am doing is entering text and photos on this site, do I need : the FP extensions installed on the host >NO Show quoteHide quote : problem with leaving the extensions installed? >They'll become corrupted when using FTP, and could cause problems with your >site. : : Thanks. -- Tom [Pepper] Willett Microsoft MVP - FrontPage --------------------------- On Jan 30, 8:44 am, "Tom [Pepper] Willett"

I moved the site to a new host -- AND COULD NOT PUBLISH TO THAT HOST, EITHER -- same problem. So, as I said, I started a new website, rebuilt the one that was not working, removed FP extensions from the new host per your suggestion, and am now maintaining this site by FTP'ing from a separate FTP application -- FileZilla -- I edit the site in FP and use FileZILLA to FTP -- it's working fine. I may ought to get an HTML editor and maintain this site without FP.

My site at http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/ doesn't and I have no problems with using FileZilla or FP to publish, whichever I feel like at the time. Actually, come to think of it, I will more often use UltraEdit as an HTML editor and only use FP to publish. (UltraEdit highlights keywords.) But you could also try Expression Web which has a true HTML editor. Syntax errors are indicated by a wavy red line, even things like "All image tags must have an alt attritbute" I must tell myself to use it.
