I am wondering if the .NET framework and VS.NET can or cannot be installed
on Win98? my harddisk crashed lately and I was forced to use an old harddisk
in which win98 can only be installed. Thanks a lot

The framework can be installed (I don't recall if it requires SE as a
minimum), but VS.NET only runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003.

Hi Jacky,

You can install .Net Framework in win98 and .Net Framework SDK (help
files).
The SDK installation requires that you unpack the files to a directory and
launch the msi file for windows nt/xp (or not, one of the exe files that
is unpacked should do it, although it may freeze for a long time).
You also need windows installer 2 to be able to run .msi files.

Mr. Mountain
Maybe you could also consider using XPLite by LitePC
(http://www.litepc.com/) to get XP to fit on your old HD. Of course, this
solution isn't free, but it's cheap ($40). There is also a free trial -- I'm
not sure if it has any limitations.

One way is to install .net framework 1.1 and the .net framework 1.1 SDK, and
then go grab #Develop (sharpDevelop) from

http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/Default.aspx

I've been using it on another old pc, and it works fine for me.
